Founded by a father and son, J. Walton Hill JR and John W. Hill III, in 1974, Mattress Source has a long history of serving the Carolinas in the home furnishing industry. The first location of Factory Mattress Outlet opened in March of 1974 at 6153 East Independence Boulevard Charlotte, North Carolina. John and his family still operate that original store and 30 other Carolina locations to this day. While our name has changed to Mattress Source, the core values of our company have stayed the same: top quality and name brand mattresses at unbeatable prices!

Back in 1949, Walton Hill and his father owned several furniture stores in the Carolinas. After years of success, he decided to sell his furniture business and open a mattress only store with his son. When they opened for business in 1974, they became one of the nation’s first mattress only stores anywhere. After great success with their first location, Walton and John decided to expand to the other side of town, opening a second location at 5700 South Boulevard in Charlotte, NC. This location is still thriving today! In 1979 our third location took us into South Carolina, in Rock Hill, establishing our tradition of providing great sleep across the Carolina’s.

Back in 1981, the company ventured into the mattress manufacturing industry with their own label called United Sleep Products. They manufactured fine quality mattresses in a 20,000 square foot facility in Monroe, NC. In 1987, Mattress Source sold their manufacturing brand and decided to sell only the top name brands like Sealy, Simmons and Tempur-Pedic. The Hill family found it was better to be a direct distributor of top quality name brands instead of manufacturing their own. They found that the research and technology that major brands use, along with decades of trusted quality, make them an easy choice over the self made or generic imitations found in some places today. The company kept on growing in the Charlotte area throughout the 80’s and 90’s, opening locations in Concord, Gastonia, Lake Norman and Pineville.

Walton Hill retired and sold his share of the company to his son John in 2001. John immediately set expansion plans into motion. The first place he wanted to go was the South Carolina Upstate area, opening up in Spartanburg and Greenville. These two locations were the first to have the new company name Mattress Source. We soon followed that move by growing into Columbia and then the Charleston area. With our continued expansion throughout all regions of North and South Carolina, in 2004, we moved into a 40,000 square foot warehouse facility to handle our high volume demand. The Mattress Source name was so great at describing our history as the best source for great sleep, that we decided to re-brand our entire company as Mattress Source in early 2011.
